Bath time, cuddles, a bedtime story… and sweet dreams! 🌙

Sounds simple, doesn't it?

But anyone who has tried to settle a baby who suddenly decides that 10 PM is the perfect time for a party knows that bedtime doesn't always go according to plan! 😅

Sleep is essential for babies' healthy development, yet settling down at the end of the day can sometimes be challenging.

The good news? Scientific research suggests that a consistent bedtime routine can make a real difference.

And natural ingredients such as lavender and calendula can make those quiet evening moments even more enjoyable.

Why is a bedtime routine important for babies?

Babies and young children benefit from consistency and predictability.

When the same calming activities happen in a familiar order each evening, they gradually become signals that bedtime is approaching.

A 2009 study published in the scientific journal Sleep involved 405 mothers and their children, aged 7 to 36 months.

Researchers found that introducing a consistent nightly bedtime routine was associated with:

  • Easier settling at bedtime.

  • Fewer and shorter nighttime awakenings.

  • Better sleep continuity.

  • Improved maternal mood.

One of the activities included in the routine was a warm bath.

These findings suggest that a predictable bedtime routine can benefit not only babies but also their parents.

Lavender and baby sleep: What does science say?

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has traditionally been valued for its pleasant, relaxing fragrance.

But is there scientific evidence supporting its calming effects?

A small study published in Early Human Development in 2008 investigated the effects of lavender-scented bath oil on 30 infants and their mothers.

Researchers observed that, compared with the non-lavender bath group, the lavender bath group showed several encouraging results:

  • Mothers appeared more relaxed during bath time.

  • Babies cried less.

  • Infants spent more time in deep sleep following their bath.

  • Lower cortisol levels were observed, suggesting reduced stress.

Although these findings are promising, the study was small. They do not prove that lavender can treat infant sleep problems or guarantee longer sleep.

They do, however, highlight the potential value of a calm bathing experience, a pleasant fragrance and affectionate parent–baby interaction.

Calendula: Gentle care for delicate baby skin

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) has a long history of use in skincare.

Its botanical extracts are commonly found in products designed for delicate and sensitive skin.

Calendula is particularly popular in baby skincare formulations because of its traditional soothing and skin-conditioning properties.

Combined with lavender, it creates a lovely botanical pairing for a gentle evening skincare ritual.

Weleda Good Night Bath: A gentle bedtime ritual

The Weleda Good Night Bath with Calendula & Lavender is designed to make evening bath time a pleasant and comforting experience.

Its gentle formulation and botanical ingredients make it a lovely addition to a baby's evening care routine.

💜 Lavender: Provides a pleasant, relaxing aromatic experience.

🌼 Calendula: Traditionally valued for gentle skincare.

🛁 Gentle care: Helps turn bath time into a peaceful end-of-day ritual.

🤍 Connection: Creates an opportunity for cuddles, interaction and bonding between parents and babies.

It is important to remember that a bath product is not a sleep treatment and cannot guarantee uninterrupted sleep. Its role is to complement a relaxing, predictable bedtime routine.

Five simple steps for a calming baby bedtime routine

1. Dim the lights. Create a peaceful environment by reducing bright lights, noise and stimulating activities.

2. Enjoy a gentle bath. If your baby enjoys bathing, use comfortably warm water and an age-appropriate bathing product, following the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Dry and care for baby's skin. Wrap your little one in a soft towel and gently pat their skin dry.

4. Make time for cuddles. A quiet lullaby, bedtime story or gentle cuddle can become a familiar and comforting part of the evening.

5. Time for sleep. Place your baby in a safe sleeping environment appropriate for their age.

Remember that babies do not need a bath every day. If bathing causes irritation or makes your baby more alert rather than relaxed, adapt the routine accordingly.

What if my baby still wakes up during the night?

That's completely normal! 💜

Night waking is a natural part of infant development, particularly during the early months.

A bedtime routine doesn't mean your baby will suddenly sleep through the night.

However, familiar and comforting activities may help make bedtime feel calmer and more predictable for everyone.

And sometimes, that alone is a wonderful improvement!

Little moments, lasting comfort

There is no magic formula for perfect baby sleep.

But there are gentle routines, loving cuddles, soothing experiences and special moments of connection.

Weleda Good Night Bath with Calendula & Lavender can become part of those precious evening moments.

Because bedtime isn't just about falling asleep. It's also about helping your little one feel safe, loved and cared for. 🤍
